How to Scan a QR Code from a Screenshot or Image (Free, No App)
10/15/2026 • qr, how-to, scanner, privacy
Someone sends you a screenshot with a QR code in it — a Wi-Fi login, a ticket, a payment link — and your phone's camera can't scan a code that's already on your phone's screen. The fix is to decode the image file itself, right in your browser, with no app to install.
Use the free tool: Scan QR Code from Image — "Scan from image" mode, detection runs locally on your device.
Steps
-
Open the QR Scanner.
-
Switch to Scan from image mode, alongside the camera mode.
-
Choose the screenshot or image file containing the QR code.
-
Read the decoded result — a link, text, or Wi-Fi details — right on the page.
Make the code readable
Most failed scrns come down to the image, not the tool. Leave a clear border of empty space around all four sides of the code — detectors need that quiet zone to find the edges. Avoid screenshots where the code is cut off, heavily compressed, or tiny in a corner of a large screen. If you cropped the screenshot, re-crop it with a margin around the code. And keep expectations honest: a partial code, or one so small its squares blur together, may not decode no matter what tool you use.
Troubleshooting
- Nothing detected? Check the code isn't cropped at the edges — leave a visible border (quiet zone) around it.
- Blurry screenshot? Retake it at full size. Downscaled or compressed images lose the detail the detector needs.
- Tiny code in a big screenshot? Crop closer to the code (keeping the border) so it fills more of the image.
- Partial code? A code cut off at the edge can't be decoded — you need the whole square.

Frequently asked questions
Can I scan a QR code from a screenshot without an app?
Yes — open the scanner in your browser, switch to Scan from image mode, and pick the screenshot. No app install needed.
Is my screenshot uploaded anywhere?
No. Detection runs locally on your device; the image never leaves your browser.
Why won't my screenshot's QR code scan?
Usually the code is cropped too tight, blurry, or too small. Leave a clear border around the code and use a sharp, full-size screenshot.
Does it work with photos of QR codes too?
Yes — any image file containing a readable QR code works, whether it's a screenshot, a downloaded image, or a photo.
