How to Make a WiFi QR Code (Share Your Password Safely)

Typing a long WiFi password into every guest's phone is a ritual we've all endured. A WiFi QR code kills that problem entirely: one scan and the device joins your network automatically. You can print the code for a rental property, hang it in a cafe, or keep it as a card in your wallet.

How a WiFi QR code works

A WiFi QR code stores a small chunk of text in a standard format that phones understand natively. That text describes the network name, the security type, and the password:

When a phone scans the code, its built-in camera app recognizes the WIFI: format and offers to join the network — no special app needed. This is exactly how modern routers and smart displays generate their own QR codes.

How to make a WiFi QR code

Step-by-step

  1. Open the generator. Go to the QR Code Generator.

  2. Enter your network details in the WiFi format. Replace the placeholders in this line with your own values:

    • T: is the security type — WPA for WPA/WPA2/WPA3 networks, WEP for older WEP networks, or leave it out for an open network.
    • S: is the exact network name (SSID), including any spaces or special characters.
    • P: is the password.
    • The two trailing semicolons close the entry — keep them.
  3. Customize the code. Pick a dark color for the foreground on a light background for the most reliable scans. You can also add your logo for branding — keep error correction on high so the code still scans cleanly.

  4. Generate and download. Export as PNG for printing or sharing, or SVG if you need it vector-perfect for large prints.

A safer way to handle guest networks

If you're sharing the password for your home or office network, a little caution goes a long way:

  • Use a guest network. Most routers let you create a separate network that can't reach your main devices. Generate the QR code for the guest network and you never hand out your private-network password.
  • Rotate it occasionally. If you change the guest password, generate a new QR code — it takes seconds.
  • Label the print. Note the network name on the card so guests can verify they connected to the right one.

These steps keep the convenience of a scannable code without broadening who can access your personal network.

  1. Open the camera app and point it at the code.
  2. Tap the banner that appears with the network name.
  3. Confirm to join — no typing required.

Testing before you print

A WiFi QR code that doesn't work is worse than no code. Test before you commit to printing a hundred cards:

  • Scan with an Android phone and an iPhone — both handle the WIFI: format slightly differently.
  • Check the exact SSID. The network name must match your router's broadcast name character for character, including capitalization.
  • Verify the security type. Using WPA when the network is actually WPA2/WPA3 is fine in most cases, but old devices may be pickier.
